Skype Session With M. L. Khanna D.A.V.
School, Dwarka, New Delhi (India)
To take our learning to another
level and to make meaningful connections with other students also running a
school business, we decided to have a skype session with M. L. Khanna D.A.V.
School, Dwarka, New Delhi on August 10, 2018. The session was organized under
the guidance of the Lead Teachers of School Enterprise of both the schools,
viz., Ms. Raminder Mac of our school and Ms. Divya Sharma of M. L. Khanna D.A.V.
School, Dwarka, New Delhi.
Members of the business team of
both the schools discussed various aspects and modus operandi of their
enterprises viz. name of the enterprise, vision of the enterprise, range of
products, mode of operation of business team, promotion strategies, profit
utilization followed by question answer session.
We learnt the following aspects about the business
of M. L. Khanna D.A.V. School:
·
This is
their third year of participation in SEC under the banner of Sanjeevani-
Embracing Life
·
Their business
aims at producing, promoting and selling eco alternatives for Sustainable
Development.
·
They have a
wide range of handicraft products including jute bags and bird houses. They
also produce vermi-compost and mushrooms.
·
Their team
members are from grade 6 to 10. They do not involve grade 11 and 12 students
due to academic pressure but do take their guidance in finance related matters.
·
They have
been selling their products outside the school community from last two years targeting
nearby markets, malls and offices. They get lot of support from their parents
in organizing such events outside the school.
·
Members of
Production and Designing team shared their knowledge with 18 other schools of
Dwarka in the month of August 2018 about how waste paper and clay can be used
to design sculptures to enhance the surroundings.
·
They also
use their profits for a charitable cause.
·
They were
the winner of Asia Pacific Award for their Silver Annual Report last year with
a cash award of $2000 and also blogging mini competition.
·
They
maintain a Facebook page - @GreenThumbsDAV and update it regularly
·
From the
session we learnt that both the schools are working on similar lines, caring
for the environment, acting for sustainable development and using the profits
for a charitable cause.
However, there were certain areas where the young
students of M. L. Khanna D.A.V. School, Dwarka, New Delhi outscored us and
those were sharing their knowledge with 18 other schools of Dwarka about how
waste paper and clay can be used to design sculptures to enhance the surroundings
as well as organizing their sales outside the school community from last two
years. We have been able to diversify our sales to some extent this year
outside the school community where our students are selling the customized
T-shirts to customers outside the school.
·
We are an
edge above them as our students are in contact with a supplier for placing
orders of customized T-shirts. They are thus learning to take orders from
customers, placing these orders with the supplier, negotiating the price range
without any involvement of their teachers and developing an entirely new set of
skills.
·
We were
happy to learn from the young students of M. L. Khanna D.A.V. School, Dwarka
and hope to implement the learning in our business soon. We look forward to
another session with them.
